Celo launches the Nightfall privacy layer, enabling enterprise-grade B2B payments on-chain as cross-border flows exceed US$180 trillion.

The Celo Foundation announced the launch of Nightfall, an open-source zero-knowledge (ZK) privacy layer developed by EY and deployed as a Layer-3 (L3) chain on Celo.

The launch marks the first time Nightfall has been integrated into a payments-focused blockchain, enabling private, enterprise-grade transactions while retaining the benefits of public blockchain infrastructure.

The launch represents a significant expansion for Celo, which has established dominance in peer-to-peer payments with more than 500,000 daily active users, over one million daily transactions, and stablecoin volumes exceeding USD 2 billion per month. By integrating Nightfall, the network is broadening its focus from consumer payments to enterprise use cases.

Rene Reinsberg, Co-Founder of Celo and President of the Celo Foundation, said: “With this Layer 3, Celo now offers a comprehensive solution for both individual and institutional payment needs in markets underserved by traditional financial infrastructure.”

Nightfall, first introduced in 2017, uses ZK proof technology to enable private transfers of multiple token standards, including ERC-20, ERC-721, ERC-1155, and ERC-3525. Its ZK-ZK rollup bundles transactions into efficient blocks, reducing costs to around one-tenth of standard blockchain transfers while maintaining privacy and scalability.

With Nightfall, enterprises using Celo can now conduct private B2B transactions in stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, while benefiting from gas fee abstraction and enhanced compliance.
