PC and console leads industry momentum while mobile continues steady growth, highlighting new strategies for lifetime value capture.

The global games market is set to grow steadily through 2028, reaching 3.9 billion players worldwide. According to new industry research, growth will be driven by strong momentum in PC and console gaming, even as mobile remains the largest and fastest-expanding platform.

PC is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 3.3% between 2025 and 2028, passing one billion players for the first time. This growth is fuelled by rising adoption across Asia-Pacific and premium game releases.

Console gaming is also expanding steadily, climbing toward 688 million players over the same period. Meanwhile, mobile continues its expansion at a more modest 2.2% CAGR, reflecting general economic growth and increasing spending outside of Apple and Google’s app stores.

The report highlights that the coming years will be defined less by total market size and more by publishers’ ability to capture lifetime value. Strategies such as optimising Early Access launches, sustaining long-term post-release support, and building user-generated content ecosystems like Roblox are now considered core to success.

The report notes that 2025 shows a market that’s maturing, but not stagnating. Those that stand out will be the ones who lean into timing, retention, and ecosystem strength, not just the raw pursuit of new players.

Further in-depth analyses are set for release in the coming months, including a study on Roblox user trends and the role of post-launch content in driving sustained engagement.
