Open Campus Web3 DAO mitigates impact of TfL service disruption by offering travel support to students via £100,000 grant in EDU tokens

Open Campus, a community-led decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) building an on-chain education network, today announced a £100,000 travel grant to support London students affected by the suspension of Transport for London (TfL) applications for discounted travel cards following a cybersecurity incident last month

Open Campus is making available a no-strings-attached travel grant for students, committing the equivalent of £100,000 in EDU tokens to provide travel cost reimbursements to affected students. The grant is not a loan and will not require repayment.

Students will need to register for an Open Campus ID (OCID) using a verified university or college email and submit travel receipts for commutes to classes, including Oyster top-ups or contactless payments, which must clearly display travel amounts and dates.

Open Campus will provide students with reimbursements for travel expenses in EDU tokens, capped at the equivalent of £22 per student per week, for an initial period of four weeks. Following any reimbursements from TfL, students will have the option to make voluntary contributions to help others in need.

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, and a member of EDU Foundation Council, said: “The Open Campus travel grant helps to make London’s learning environment more equitable by helping students get to their classes. We believe that access to education should never be hindered by financial constraints. Through the EduFi initiative, we aim to foster a more inclusive educational landscape that provides students with the support they need to pursue their academic goals.”

Shan Han, core contributor, ecosystem at Open Campus, said: “Our grant initiative reflects our commitment to supporting students who face financial hurdles, helping to ensure that no students have to sacrifice their education due to transport costs. This initiative underscores our goal to empower students to thrive academically by lowering the economic barriers that hinder their potential.”

The travel grant initiative forms part of EduFi, a blockchain concept seeking to expand access to education through combining decentralised technology with financing, grants and scholarships.
