MonoMove is designed to improve Aptos performance for compute-heavy applications, with mainnet rollout planned for 2027.

Aptos Labs has proposed MonoMove, an upgrade to the Aptos execution engine that the company says could execute smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current engine.

The proposed upgrade is aimed at increasing the amount of activity that Aptos can process, particularly for applications with compute-heavy workloads and those that repeatedly access the same data.

Smart contracts underpin on-chain applications such as trading venues, lending protocols, and payment systems. Faster contract execution could increase the capacity available to financial applications operating on the network.

The upgrade is still under development and requires a governance vote before implementation. Aptos Labs expects MonoMove to reach feature completeness by the end of 2026, with a mainnet rollout planned for 2027.

Avery Ching, Co-Founder and CEO of Aptos Labs, said: “This proposed upgrade to the execution engine could help achieve both of those goals. MonoMove would deliver the fastest smart contract execution we have ever measured on top of the strongest security model in blockchain.

The company is continuing to test the engine across a broader range of scenarios, including through extensive testing and fuzzing, as it completes the remaining features.
