Wakefield Research finds CFOs want finance AI that is verifiable and escalates ambiguity to
humans, not black-box automation.
A new study suggests mid-market CFOs are shifting the finance AI debate from whether to adopt to how to adopt solutions that are both fast and auditable.
Wakefield Research surveyed 100 CFOs at mid-market US companies (US$50 million–US$500 million in revenue). Depending on the use case, 60% to 77% said they already plan to adopt AI. However, the findings point to a trust gap that is slowing execution.
The study reports that 96% of CFOs view AI’s biggest benefit as freeing time for strategic work, yet only 14% completely trust AI to deliver accurate accounting data on its own. Separately, 97% said human oversight is critical.
The release positions the market as split between two models: AI copilots that still require transaction-by-transaction review, and AI agents that promise full automation but provide limited transparency, auditability, and business-context understanding. Instead, CFOs are described as seeking “intelligent escalation” — AI that operates autonomously on routine transactions, but escalates ambiguous cases with full context.
The release argues that as foundational AI capability improves, judgement in terms of understanding business context, company policies, and when human input is required, becomes the key differentiator.
Dominic Rand, CFO, Kiva Brands, said: “What we needed was what Maximor delivered: AI that could handle the routine with speed and precision and knew exactly when to bring a human into the loop. That’s when automation becomes a partnership, not a risk.”
Ramnandan Krishnamurthy, Co-founder and CEO, Maximor, said: “CFOs aren’t asking for smarter AI – they’re asking for AI that knows its limits. They need systems that are verifiable, operate autonomously when appropriate, and demonstrate judgment about when to act and when to escalate.”
The study concludes that finance leaders are demanding speed, verifiable accuracy, full audit trails, and intelligent escalation before AI adoption becomes the norm.
