The collaboration with Khalifa University will deliver telecom-specific AI assets to accelerate AI adoption across mobile networks.

The GSMA Foundry announced a strategic cooperation agreement with Khalifa University of Science and Technology aimed at advancing artificial intelligence in telecoms. The partnership will focus on developing specialised AI data assets, models, and benchmarking frameworks tailored to the needs of the mobile industry.

In the first phase, the GSMA and Khalifa University will release key Open Telco assets designed to support accurate, telecom-optimised AI systems. These include TelecomGPT, a telco-first large language model with a chat interface hosted on LightOn, and an Open Telco Knowledge Graph focused on 3GPP documentation, built using LightOn compute and hosted on Hugging Face.

Both assets are intended to help operators and vendors adopt AI models that can handle complex telecom standards, troubleshooting tasks, and technical documentation more effectively.

Professor Bayan Sharif, Provost of Khalifa University, said: “We are pleased to enter into this collaboration with GSMA and offer our expertise in AI for further advancing innovations in the telecom industry. We believe the synergy resulting from combining resources will lead to telecom-specific AI solutions that address critical limitations in current AI models.”

Professor Merouane Debbah, Director of the 6G Research Center, added: “By uniting Khalifa University’s research strength with GSMA’s industry leadership, we are poised to set new benchmarks in AI model reliability and innovation. Together, we aim to empower the region’s digital transformation and ensure that telecom AI solutions are robust, trustworthy and ready for tomorrow’s challenges.”

Alex Sinclair, CTO of the GSMA, commented: “Thanks to our collaboration with Khalifa University, the mobile ecosystem stands to benefit from AI capabilities specifically designed for telecommunications, addressing critical areas such as managing network faults and supporting operational decision-making.”

Louis Powell, Director of AI Technologies at the GSMA, noted: “By collaborating with the team at Khalifa University, we have created a collaborative ecosystem that is already accelerating innovation to ensure that AI solutions are fit for purpose in real-world networks.”

The partnership with Khalifa University is expected to accelerate the development and deployment of telecom-specific AI across the industry.
