The pilot combines blockchain records and physical authentication to improve cocoa traceability and compliance readiness.
The Hashgraph Group, Merck, and PwC Germany are piloting a cocoa traceability solution that combines physical product authentication with blockchain-based records and enterprise process design.
The solution brings together The Hashgraph Group’s TrackTrace Digital Product Passport platform, Merck’s M-Trust physical authentication technology, and PwC Germany’s consulting and implementation expertise to help cocoa companies verify the origin, authenticity, and quality across the supply chain.
Each cocoa batch or sellable product receives a digital identity linked to a digital twin which is recorded on the Hedera network. The physical product or packaging is then verified against the digital record for accuracy. Authorised stakeholders will also be able to access a verifiable history of the product, while selected information can also be shared with consumers through QR codes.
The pilot aims to address data fragmentation in cocoa supply chains and help participants prepare for regulatory requirements such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), as well as the wider move towards Digital Product Passports under the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.
Stefan Deiss, CEO and Co-Founder of The Hashgraph Group, said: “By integrating TrackTrace with Merck’s M-Trust™ technology and PwC’s process expertise, we can link any physical product, not limited to cocoa, to a trusted digital record.”
Thomas Endress, Executive Director, Head of M-Trust at Merck, added: “It addresses a critical challenge faced by cocoa processors – maintaining a verifiable trail not only of the finished product, but also of its raw materials, including their quality and compliance history.”
