Hitachi Vantara targets net-zero emissions by FY2040, including a 98% cut in emissions from its own operations and energy use by FY2030.
Data storage and infrastructure provider Hitachi Vantara has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by FY2040, with a target to reduce emissions from its own operations and energy use by 98% from its FY2024 baseline by FY2030.
The company said its emissions targets have been independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an organisation that assesses whether companies’ emissions targets are consistent with climate science.
Hitachi Vantara said its near-term targets are aligned with a pathway designed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, while SBTi validation confirms that the targets are consistent with the latest climate science. The firm also reduced emissions from its own operations and energy use by 43% in FY2025, while aiming to reduce emissions linked to its wider value chain by 51% per usable petabyte of storage capacity sold by FY2036.
In addition, the company has expanded sustainability initiatives across its Virtual Storage Platform One data platform and is working to align its wider product portfolio with the Hitachi Eco-Design Management Guidelines.
Courtney Hadden, Sustainability Director at Hitachi Vantara, said: “Sustainability is most effective when it is embedded into decision-making across the organisation, supported by strong governance and informed by reliable data. Independent validation of our targets reinforces that approach, providing a clear, science-based framework to measure our progress and hold ourselves accountable over the long term.”
