Mimecast’s latest report finds APAC organisations report more insider-driven incidents per month than peers in EMEA and North America.
Global cybersecurity company, Mimecast, released its State of Human Risk 2026 study which found that organisations across the Asia Pacific (APAC) are experiencing insider-driven cyber incidents more frequently than counterparts in North America and Europe, highlighting ongoing business risk linked to human behaviour.
APAC organisations face an average of around eight insider-driven data exposure, loss, leak, or theft incidents per month, compared with approximately six in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and five in North America.
The average cost per insider-driven incident is broadly consistent across regions at around US$13.1 million, but APAC’s higher incident frequency increases cumulative financial, operational, and reputational impact.
The study described insider-driven incidents, including compromised credentials, negligent actions, or inadvertent employee mistakes, as a regular feature of today’s cyber threat landscape rather than isolated events. In APAC, the higher frequency is becoming a defining risk factor for organisations operating at scale.
64% of APAC respondents expect insider-driven data loss to increase at their organisation over the next 12 months, suggesting concerns that existing controls may not keep pace with complex modern work environments. Around 53% of APAC organisations are already using AI-driven behavioural or sentiment analysis to identify potential insider threats.
Nicky Choo, Vice President and General Manager, APAC, Mimecast, said: “What differentiates APAC is not that insider-driven incidents are more costly than elsewhere, but that they are happening more often. When organisations are dealing with insider incidents on a recurring basis, the cumulative impact on operations, customer trust and regulatory exposure becomes significant.”
Mimecast said the study highlights the need to manage insider risk as a core component of cyber resilience.
